Research Paper: 3D Bioprinting and Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Biofabrication of Personalized Oral Soft Tissue Constructs

Heartiest congratulations to Dr Sriram Gopu on his fantastic achievement to wrap up 2024! AM.NUS is proud to have supported Dr Gopu in his latest publication on “3D bioprinting and AI-assisted biofabrication of personalized oral soft tissue constructs”, which is a testament to the groundbreaking work being done in biofabrication. The paper demonstrates an innovative method to regenerate oral soft tissue defects, such as mucogingival defects around teeth and implants. Researchers utilised 3D bioprinting to create customized grafts with precise shapes and cellular organisation. The approach involved a novel polysaccharide/fibrinogen-based bioink, optimized for shape-controlled gingival constructs through detailed rheological and printability assessments.

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools streamlined bioprinting parameter optimisation, enhancing precision and efficiency. The bioprinted constructs showed excellent cellular viability and shape fidelity over 18 days of culture. While variations in bioink thickener concentration slightly influenced cellular organisation, they significantly impacted shape fidelity.

This breakthrough paves the way for personalised soft tissue grafts to repair mucogingival defects caused by periodontal disease and dental implants, marking a significant advancement in biofabrication and oral tissue regeneration.
