Research Paper: A Universal Chelation-Induced Selective Demetallization Strategy for Bioceramic Nanosheets (BCene)

This paper discusses the revolutionary impact of nanosheet materials like graphene and phosphorene, created by breaking interlayer van der Waals forces, in various fields. Layered inorganic materials have broad applications, but their strong interlayer bonding hinders nanosheet fabrication. The study introduces a method to create nanosheets by selectively exfoliating interlayer metal atoms through metal-chelation reactions. The approach is exemplified by producing bioceramic nanosheets (BCene) from Akermanite (AKT), enhancing mechanical strength and bioactivity in 3D-printed scaffolds compared to AKT nanopowders. This technique offers promise for tissue engineering using BCene nanosheets and can potentially optimise performance in other inorganic layered crystals.
